Advances in the production of temperate fruits in the tropics Agronomy
Pio, Rafael; Souza, Filipe Bittencourt Machado de; Kalcsits, Lee; Bisi, Rayane Barcelos; Farias, Daniela da Hora.
The present study aimed to review the advances in the production of temperate fruits to determine future research directions that improve production in the tropics. Temperate fruits are no longer only produced in regions characterized by a cold winter period. These fruits are also produced in the sub-tropical and tropical regions characterized by mild winter or even the absence of chilling conditions often required by the tree to break dormancy. Currently, temperate fruit production is possible in certain regions of South America, Africa and Asia that are near to the Equator. However, temperate tree fruit production in tropical regions requires modified techniques to overcome dormancy and allow adequate flowering, growth and productivity. The main...

External activity of colonies of Melipona quinquefasciata managed in different types of beehive Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Mascena,Valdenio Mendes; Silva,Celso Moreira; Almeida,Cicero Lima de; Alves,Társio Thiago Lopes; Freitas,Breno Magalhães.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the influence of the environment and of two models of beehive (wooden box and ceramic pot) on the flight activity of the ground-nesting bee, Melipona quinquefasciata. The experiment took place in the Chapada do Araripe, in the State of Ceará, Brazil, between July 2014 and June 2015. The study followed colonies in three ceramic pots and four wooden boxes. Observations of the flight activity of the bees and of the climate were made on five days every month, each colony being monitored for 5 min, at intervals of one hour, from 0500 to 1700. The internal temperature and relative humidity of the hives were also recorded every hour throughout the year. The temperature correlated positively with the bees' entering and leaving the...

Flight activity and colony strength in the stingless bee Melipona bicolor bicolor (Apidae, Meliponinae) BJB
HILÁRIO,S. D.; IMPERATRIZ-FONSECA,V. L.; KLEINERT,A. de M. P..
Flight activity of Melipona bicolor bicolor, coming from Cunha (23º05'S, 44º55'W), Atlantic Forest, was studied in ten colonies, and in two periods: from July to September 1993 and from August to September 1995. The colonies were grouped in weak, medium and strong, according to the diameter of the combs, which can provide a good idea of the number of cells built. 855 observations were accomplished for 5 minutes, every half-hour, from 8 to 18 hours. The total number of bees that entered and left the hive and the number of bees that arrived with mud, pollen and resin, besides the number that went out with debris in that period were counted. It was also registered the temperature and the relative humidity of the air. The total external activity, as well as...

Protein and carbohydrate fractionation of Jiggs Bermudagrass in different seasons and under intermittent grazing by Holstein cows Animal Sciences
Brandstetter, Eduardo Valcácer; Costa, Katia Aparecida de Pinho; Santos, Darliane de Castro; Souza, Wender Ferreira de; Silva, Victor Costa e; Dias, Mariana Borges de Castro.
Jiggs bermudagrass has presented competitive production potential over other forages. However, there is a lack of information about the nutritional value of this forage with important relevance in ruminant nutrition. This study aimed to evaluate the protein and carbohydrate fractionation of Jiggs bermudagrass in different seasons of the year under intermittent grazing by Holstein cows. The experiment was conducted during one year in a completely randomized design with nine replications and treatments consisted of the effect of four seasons: fall, winter, spring and summer. The results showed that there were seasonal variations in the fractions of proteins and carbohydrate, with the exception of the protein fraction B3. The better climatic conditions in...
